Alexandria, West Dunbartonshire. This exotically named town lies on the River Leven and in the Vale of Leven, associated with the Scots l8th-century novelist Tobias Smollett. The place's main preoccupation was the bleach business established in 1768. Later came turkey-red dyeing, of which the town had almost a world monopoly. No turkey-red dyeing is done there now, as the industry was badly hit after the First World War. This town was the site of the Argyll Motor Co., which early in this century produced the first complete motor car in Scotland. Their premises were taken over in 1936 by the R.N. torpedo factory, and in 1971 by a large electronics concern.
