Balloch, West Dunbartonshire. The town actually stands upon the River Leven, but, for most of those who visit it, Balloch is noted for its pier upon Loch Lomond; this is what makes Balloch the “gateway to Loch Lomond”. It is the starting place for cruises right up to the North end of the loch as far as Ardlui, 24 miles away. The cruises may take the form of journeys by motorboat or speed-boat or even by water-skiing. Balloch Castle was built in the 19th century and together with the grounds around it, is now owned by the Glasgow Corporation. They are open to the public. 1½ miles North West of Balloch stands Auchendennan House. This is now a youth hostel. As one near both to celebrated scenery and to so dense a population, it is the biggest hostel of its kind in Scotland.
