Helensburgh, Argyll and Bute. This popular holiday burgh stands on the lower Clyde near its junction with the Gare Loch, and is a centre for yachting and boat-building. The burgh began to be laid out as a residential district about 1776 by Sir James Colquhoun of Luss. During the 19th century it became a popular dormitory suburb of Glasgow as well as a holiday centre. It has some good examples of Victorian architecture. Henry Bell (1767—1830), designer of the early steamboat the Comet, stayed in the town from 1807 and did experiments while his wife kept the principal inn. An obelisk to him stands on the sea-front. The flywheel of the Comet is preserved in Hermitage Park. John Logie Baird, pioneer of television, was also a native of the town.
About 1km North of the town on the road across the hill to Loch Lomond is the entrance to Glen Fruin, where in 1603 a clan battle, or rather massacre, took place by the Macgregors against the Colquhouns. It was partly for this that the law was passed in April of the same year outlawing the whole Clan Gregor and proscribing the name. It was this outlawry of an entire clan that gave Sir Walter Scott so much of the theme of his most popular novel, Rob Roy.
