Arrochar, Argyll and Bute, is a tourist village, and a focal centre for climbers, lying in the West Highland district, within comparatively easy reach of Glasgow. It is at the head of the sea-arm of Loch Long, at the narrows to Tarbet on Loch Lomond (of which more below). It has a railway station on the West Highland route from Glasgow, and is easily approached by road, or by water by the steamers up Loch Lomond. It is surrounded by some notable mountains. To the North West stands a group of the finest peaks in Argyll, particularly Ben Arthur, usually styled the Cobbler, and Ben Narniam and Ben Ime, both over 3,000 ft. The first two offer facilities for rock-climbing. To the South West lies the large Argyll National Forest Park.

Six and a half centuries before 1910, and long before such things as torpedoes were ever dreamt of, this district was the scene of one of the most remarkable achievements in naval warfare that have ever taken place within Scotland’s orbit. In 1263, when King Haakon of Norway launched his great Armada against Scotland, which was to culminate in his defeat at the Battle of Laros, some of his ships sailed right up to the end of Loch Long. Not content with this penetration of a sea loch, the men in charge of the boats that had come all the way from Norway dragged them across the narrow strip of land. They thus launched them upon the enclosed fresh waters of Loch Lomond and into the very heart of Scotland itself. This was a naval commando raid of the highest daring; it is still remembered in Scotland with admiration.
