Dumbarton, West Dunbartonshire. An important shipbuilding royal burgh, Dumbarton is dominated by a 240-ft rock, a volcanic plug of basalt. This rock has a longer history as a stronghold than any other place in Britain; from at least the 5th century to 1018, it was the centre of the kingdom of Strathclyde, and was a royal castle in medieval times. Later it. became a barracks, and remained such until the 20th century; it is now a museum. The medieval buildings have gone, but the 17th- and l8th-century fortifications are still visible. The Castle was taken by Thomas Crawford of Jordanhill in 1571 after holding out for Mary Queen of Scots during a longer period than anywhere except Edinburgh Castle. The tower-arch in Church Street is all that remains of the Collegiate Church of St Mary founded in the mid-l5th century.
Boat-building (mentioned in James IV's reign) was, and is, an industry here. The Leven shipyard of Denny, a long-famous firm, started in 1844 and was liquidated in 1963; it was associated with the Cutty Sark, Shamrock II and Shamrock III, and the Denny-Brown stabilizer; and finally it was the first firm in Britain to develop the hovercraft. Nowadays Dumbarton's main industry is the blending and bonding of whisky.
