Ardrossan, North Ayrshire. Here is an example of 19th century town-planning; the town and harbour were laid out by the 12th Earl of Eglinton in 1805, but it was not until the use of sea-going steamboats that the project began to be successful. The port handles a number of imports and exports for the Scottish iron and steel industries, the great chemical works at Ardeer and passenger and freight traffic with Northern Ireland and the Scottish islands. The Shell oil refinery handles 1,000,000 tons of petroleum products annually, including fuel for Prestwick and Abbotsinch airports. But Ardrossan has extensive, clean beaches, and there are ample holidaymakers' pursuits.
