Lamlash, North Ayrshire, is a small town on the Isle of Arran. Along with Whiting Bay, this, after Brodick, is the most popular holiday resort in Arran. Situated in a striking bay on the East coast 4 miles South of Brodick, and in the part of the island where the Highland scenery of the North just gives place to the more Lowland contours of the South, Lamlash contains the two attractions of Arran. Its bay is protected by the small but lofty Holy Island. This protection allowed King Haakon of Norway to rest his armada before attacking Scotland (to be defeated at Largs) in 1263 in Lamlash Bay. The bay also has been used as a base for later British naval forces, particularly just before the First World War, when there was fear of civil war in Ireland.
