Visit Soham and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast accommodation:
Soham, Cambridgeshire. Here in the early 7th century St Felix of Burgundy established an abbey a few years before Etheldreda founded Ely 5 miles to the north west across the causeway.
Soham Abbey, however, unlike Ely, was not rebuilt after it had been destroyed by the Danes. St Andrew's, a great cruciform church of unusual interest, has some Norman work but also much from the succeeding centuries. The fine tower is Perpendicular, c. 1500, and the roof of the nave is interestingly constructed of hammer-beams alternating with tie-beams and queen posts.
