Lakenheath, Suffolk. Situated in the north-west tip of Suffolk and one of its few villages West of the All. It overlooks the fens and is the site of one of the largest United States Air Force bases in this country. No doubt due to its position away from the centre of the county its magnificent Church of St Mary is less well known than it should be. Its great number of interesting features make it one of the finest in a county famed for its churches.
The chancel arch is Norman and above is a splendid wooden roof carved with angels. More fine carving is to be seen on the benches in the nave and in the l5th century octagonal pulpit. Every authority agrees that the font is the best l3th century example in the county. Octagonal in shape it has deeply moulded arches and is supported by slender columns clustered around the main shaft. The many wall paintings include St Edmund, St John and scenes from the life of Christ. Brasses and monuments add to the interest of the interior.
Not far to the East of the village there is evidence of Neolithic and Iron Age settlements and of later Roman occupation.
