Mildenhall, Suffolk. Lying just off the A11 at the Barton Mills junction, Mildenhall is in the north-west corner of the county. It has one of the finest churches for miles around, large in scale and with many superb features. Of all these perhaps the most famous is the roof, elaborately carved with biblical scenes, fantastic beasts and other designs and with a host of the angels for which so many Suffolk churches are renowned. This wonderful roof was peppered with shot by the zealous iconoclasts of the 17th century. Fortunately, however, their action had little effect.
Over 160 ft in length with a tower over 110 ft in height this Church of St Mary has a particularly lovely north porch, over which is a Lady Chapel. The east window is of rare design with seven lights and like the chapel to the north of the aisle is of Ely design.
Pleasantly situated on the River Lark, Mildenhall was the site of the Mildenhall Treasure found in 1946. Now on display in the British Museum, this splendid hoard of more than 30 pieces of silver table-ware included the great dish showing Bacchus and Hercules. Some of this 4th century. Roman ware may well have originated in Rome itself.
The Royal Worlington and Newmarket Golf Club close to the town has been described as the best nine-hole course in the world.
