Visit Shanklin and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast accommodation:

Shanklin, Isle of Wight. This busy and popular seaside town is set on a 150-ft cliff, but gentle slopes lead down to the beach, pier, esplanade and marine gardens and the many eating places, bars and amusements. The bathing is judged to be extremely safe. The wooded Chine, 180 ft wide and nearly 300 ft deep, is a noted beauty-spot where French raiders were defeated in an engagement in 1545. Keats wrote part of Endymion in the shade of its tall trees. A small stream, rising from the Chalybeate Spring, flows through the cleft to the beach. At the inland end of the Chine lies the Old Village and its thatched cottages with roses and honeysuckle round the doors. The fountain has the British and American flags emblazoned in the stonework, and a verse by Longfellow who stayed here in 1868. The Church of St Blasius, of 14th-century origin, has Shanklin Down for a backdrop.
