Brading, Isle of Wight, was once a harbour. As recently as the 1870s, small ships sailed up the Yar at high tide. Since 1880 a mile-long causeway has cut off the sea from the town, adding some 650 acres of flat, marshy land to the area, rich in bird life. St Mary's Church is the oldest on the island, with Norman work. The tower is Early English, and is fretted with arches, so that processions circling the church could remain on consecrated ground. Skeletons of prehistoric men 7 ft tall were once unearthed on the site. The church has monuments of the Oglander family, part of the island's history for 800 years. In the reign of Henry I they owned Nunwell Manor which is still in their possession. Charles I was their guest here.

Edward VI gave Brading its definitive charter and administration today is in the hands of eight members of the Parish Council and a Town Trust. It is no longer a borough.

In the centre of the town is evidence of the old bull ring, and there are stocks under the old town hall. Brading has another claim on the visitor's time, for at Morton Farm near Yarbridge is a well-preserved Roman villa considered the best of the eight discovered on the island. The mosaics are of special interest.
