Chale, Isle of Wight, North West of St Catherine's Point, overlooks Chale Bay. This part of the coast has always been dangerous to shipping and was much used by wreckers. The church with its great Perpendicular tower was once a beacon for shipping, but the manor house. The Abbey Farm, dates from the 14th century and there is a fine 15th-century barn. About ½ mile to the South lies Blackgang Chine; its name derives from the old smuggling gangs. There is no way down to the beach from this stream-cut chine, whose sides of dark-blue clay interlarded with yellow sandstone rise 400 ft. The clay is a manifestation of the “blue slipper”, liable to slide the layers above it off high points carrying buildings and topsoil with them into the sea. It explains the Landslip, and the Upper and Lower Slips that are features of this coast. The Observation Post gives good views of the area.
