Hornsea, East Riding. The largest freshwater lake in Yorkshire a placid 467 acres - is only ¾ mile from the North Sea and the wonder of this small town in Holderness. The lake was formed by glacial deposits and it has wooded banks, two small islands and wildfowl sanctuary. Herons, geese, swans, grebes, cormorants, teal, and goldeneye are seen here. There are also rare plants. The lake has a sailing club. Boating and angling can be arranged for visitors. The mere belongs to a descendant of the Constable family who lives at Wassand Hall. For about 20 years in the 13th century it was the object of bitter dispute over fishing rights between the abbots of St Mary's, York, and Meaux. They decided to settle it with a duel and engaged champions. The contest lasted all day and, apparently without bloodshed, St Mary's knight won. A public footpath allows you to make the 5-mile walk around the lake. Building hides the mere from the main street which winds through the holiday town, but it is found easily enough by a lane. The old village has extended itself to the sea, where there are boarding houses, sandy beaches and bracing views. St Nicholas' Church was built of cobbles in the 14th and 15th centuries. The spire fell from its battlemented tower in 1733.
