Sleaford, Lincolnshire, is a small market town where the quiet River Slea divides into two channels. Little is known of the town itself until its emergence in the Domesday Book, but after that it became a place closely associated with the bishops of Lincoln. The Church of St Denis, dominating the market place, has the nobility of a cathedral in the richness of its fabric, particularly on first sight of its grand west front surmounted by the sturdy tower which supports one of England's earliest stone spires; but the outstanding feature of Sleaford church is the wealth of flowing tracery that beautifies the windows beyond comparison with those of almost any parish church in the country.

Another building for which Sleaford is notable is the Carre Hospital opposite, a fine group of grey-stone almshouses founded in 1636 by Sir Robert Carre, whose family is remembered in this and the fine Sleaford Grammar School for its many works of charity in the past.
