Swineshead, Lincolnshire. The worn remains of the market cross preserved with another relic of bygone times, the old broken stocks, in the War Memorial garden here indicate that this large village was formerly a market town. The medieval Church of St Mary, with its massive and very tall tower, is an outstanding landmark for many miles. The lower portion of this tower is 14th century, and the superstructure, comprising a pinnacled belfry and embattled octagon from which the spire rises a further 160 ft, dates from a century later. The interior is almost cathedral-like in its grandeur, with fine timbering and stonework providing a dignified setting for the many ancient memorials relating to the long history of the parish. A mile North West of the village is the site of a small Cistercian abbey founded in 1148, where King John and his retinue lodged for a few days after losing their equipment at Sutton Bridge while attempting to traverse the treacherous waters of the Wash. There is no foundation to the tradition, the plot of Shakespeare's tragic play, that the king was poisoned by the monks of Swineshead Abbey before meeting his end at Newark Castle.
