Bardney, Lincolnshire. A rather plain little Fen town with a long high street leading down to the River Witham where a large sugar-beet factory stands next to the bridge. Bardney was once famed for the great Benedictine abbey traditionally founded in the 7th century by Etheired, king of Mercia, and his queen, Ostryth, niece of Oswald, king of Northumbria. Many years after Oswald was slain in battle in A.D. 642, Queen Ostryth brought his remains to Bardney Abbey and buried them within the walls; these still remain, covering 25 acres and mostly overgrown. Pilgrims flocked to the shrine until the abbey was destroyed by the Danes in 870. In Norman times it was sumptuously rebuilt by the Earl of Lincoln, and its abbots sat in Parliament as Lords of Lindsey. In the Domesday Book it was valued at £429 a year.

In 1912 the abbey ruins were excavated and many relics and interesting bits of stonework are now preserved in the Parish Church of St Lawrence. The church is mainly l5th century with a later medieval brick chancel, and one of the finest of the monuments unearthed from the abbey is that of Abbot Richard Hornastel, who died in 1508. The high altar is said to be the body-stone of King Oswald.
