Settle, North Yorkshire. A picturesque centre for touring in an area of great limestone hills and crags, across the Ribble from Giggleswick. Narrow streets, tiny courtyards, and good Georgian houses contribute to an interesting townscape. In the Market Square are the Elizabethan-style Town Hall built in 1832 and the 17th-century. Shambles, with living-quarters opening on to a gallery above the filled-in arcade. The large stone town house built in 1679 by Thomas Preston is known as The Folly because he lacked the money to finish it. Lovers of panoramas will toil up Castleberg Crag that stands 300ftabove the town. Victoria Cave was discovered in 1838 at Langcliffe, North East of Settle. The cave is 1,450 ft above sea-level, and it had through the ages been a hyena den, a hunters' refuge and a place of concealment during the troubled days of the later Roman occupation. Benjamin Waugh, the founder of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, was born in Settle. So, too, was Dr George Birkbeck who founded the mechanics' institutes and whose name is remembered in Birkbeck College, London.
