Grassington, West Riding. This Wharfedale village is one of the most appealing in the dales; its buildings crowd around a small market place paved with cobblestones and along irregular passages. The river is crossed by a stone bridge placed there in 1603 and widened in the late 18th century. One of the houses, the Old Hall, dates in part from the 13th century, and 17th-century cottages are fairly common. It has been a centre for lead-mining but today is largely dependent upon the visitors' trade. Fishing and walking are two popular diversions. River paths lead to Burnsall and Bolton Abbey or up into the moors. Grassington has always appealed to people, it seems, for the area has numerous prehistoric sites. An especially good one is Lea Green, a pasture reached from Chapel Street, where an Iron Age village stood. Grass Woods nearby is a nature reserve.
