Ingleton, North Yorkshire. This is a one-industry town and the industry is tourism. The main Street is solidly lined with shops and cafés and the pavements thronged with fell-walkers, climbers and potholers. Signs of Ingleton's small-scale industrial past are blurring. Coal workings established it in the first place, and cotton mills and lime kilns kept it going. But the railway from Skipton in 1849 made Ingleton a tourist centre for the ruggedly beautiful terrain of the far West Riding. The little town clings to the hillside above the junction of the Twiss and Doe rivers which thereafter become the Greta. There is a beautiful 4-mile walk up the Twiss valley, across the moors and down the Doe with views of the renowned waterfalls. For climbers, Ingleborough summit at 2,373 ft is less than 4 miles by a good path. A long ridge walk (some 7 miles) leads to the top of Whernside, 2,414 ft above sea-level. For those fascinated by caves, there are the popular White Scar Caves, open to the public, with their intricate rock formations, stalagmites and stalactites, underground river and lake, and Skirwith Cave with its waterfall.
