Ottery St Mary, Devon. A small town, it has a large church of great age, fame and interest. Mainly l4th-century it is said to have been modelled on Exeter Cathedral, but close comparison would be invidious. It has stone-vaulted ceilings, a choir with a corridor round it and a Lady Chapel to the East as in a cathedral, a clock showing the phases of the moon said to be 14th-century, and interesting medieval effigy-tombs. Its interest is in its detail and complex history, explained at length in the guide book on sale inside. From 1061 to 1335 the manor was owned by Rouen Cathedral in France, from whom the Bishop of Exeter then bought it and greatly extended the church.
The poet Coleridge was born and grew up in the town and wrote a “Sonnet to the River Otter”. From 1760 to 1781 his father was the local vicar. Thackeray set his Pendennis here. In the Chanters House (l8th-century front) at the end of a lane North of the church, Cromwell in 1645 convened a meeting to demand money for his Civil War cause, and Fairfax for a time made the town his headquarters. A wool centre in the Middle Ages, it turned to lace and milk in the 19th century.
Cadhay, 1 mile North West, is one of the finest Tudor houses in Devon, built c. 1550 by a lawyer, John Haydon.
The Otter is a good — and pretty — trout stream.
