Broadclyst, Devon. Its church has a beautiful l6th century red and grey church tower with exquisite window tracery. Inside, the church, tall and expensive, with stone angels flying from white pillar capitals, has one of the most lavish Jacobean monuments in Devon (to Sir John Acland) and, across the chancel, another more modest but just as fine. Around the church and the yew-ringed churchyard the village is thatched and pretty. Much of it is owned by the National Trust, including a well-preserved mill on the River Clyst.
A Domesday farm called Churchill in Broadclyst parish is thought to have been the original home of the Churchill family.
Two miles North, Killerton Park (300 acres) and Gardens are owned by the National Trust, and even in the late evening visitors can put their money in the box, stroll on a hillside scented by an infinite variety of trees and shrubs, and look far South over a great plain and West to Dartmoor. On the east side of the park a chapel built 1841. The house, late Georgian, is not open. All was created by the Acland family.
