Cullompton, Devon, has one of the finest and most interesting churches in Devon. Now a small market town, in the 16th and 17th centuries. it had a woollen (especially kersey) industry almost as prosperous as Tiverton's and this accounts for its church's splendour: lavish waggon-roof, brightly coloured but not gaudy; huge coloured screen, not as intricate as some but larger than most; finely carved Jacobean gallery; and whole extra aisle with splendid fan-vaulted stone roof paid for by a wool stapler, John Lane, in c. 1526. The town suffered a great fire in 1839. It opens out pleasantly in its centre, as do so many coaching-towns, with cobbled pavements behind lime trees. The Manor House Hotel is basically c. 1603, enlarged in the 18th century, and near it Walronds, a private house, was built 1603—5. Higher Kingsmill, on the north-east edge of the town, is the oldest paper mill (1757) still operating in Devon.
Two miles East North East Kentisbeare church has a fine screen (late 15th-century), and Priesthill, the medieval old church-house nearby, is well preserved with good panelling and minstrels' gallery.
