Lechlade, Gloucestershire. Almost on the borders of Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Wiltshire, where the tributaries Leach and Coin flow into the Thames, here called the Isis, is the unspoilt village of Lechlade. It has a good number of small brick and stone Georgian houses. The elegant spire of the 15th-century Perpendicular church dedicated to St Lawrence dominates the village. The panelled chancel roof is ornamented by some 40 exquisitely carved bosses and stone corbels, and the exterior is parapeted with two rich tiers of quatrefoils. Pinnacled buttresses bear the weight. Lechlade is naturally a favourite place for boating. It is interesting to remember that stone for Sir Christopher Wren's dome of St Paul's was loaded into barges here.
