Hope, Derbyshire. Two miles east of Castleton and in the centre of the Hope Valley, this village is known for the fishing and rough shooting available here. On the nearest Saturday to St Peter's Day (29 June), a well is dressed in the village; and in late summer, the Hope Valley Agricultural Show with its well-known sheepdog trials is a major attraction. The parish church has a l4th-century tower with a broach spire, and a number of remarkable gargoyles, large and crude. In the churchyard is a 9th-century Anglo-Saxon cross shaft. Near the village - and looking rather like a miniature Cape Kennedy - are the works of a famous cement company.
