Ashford-in-the-Water, Derbyshire. There are three bridges across the River Wye in this small village 2 miles north west of Bakewell. The oldest is the Sheepwash bridge, as narrow today as it was the day it was built, and one of the others dates from 1664. Close by the village are the quarries from which the famous Ashford marble came. The Church of the Holy Trinity was rebuilt about 100 years ago but the fine Norman tympanum, showing a tree of life, was incorporated over the south doorway. Inside hang four paper garlands, rare and ancient, of the kind which were carried at funerals. At Fin Cop, 1 ½ miles north west of the village, are the remains of an Iron Age fort.
