Goole, East Riding of Yorkshire. Fifty miles from the sea is this busy port, established as the terminus of the Aire and Calder canal from Knottingley in 1826. The canal company sought to improve navigation to the Ouse to speed the export of Yorkshire coal and textiles. At this point, the Don and Ouse rivers meet by way of the “Dutch River”, so named because it was cut by Cornelius Vermuyden, a Dutch engineer, in the days of Charles I to drain the Hatfield Chase marshes. The area around Goole, low and watery, does have a Netherlandish feeling. The red-brick town is visible for some distance across the flat land, its high points being two water towers, the church steeple and the dockside cranes. Town life centres around the busy docks, with municipal and harbour offices sharing the Bank Chambers, built in 1892. Nearly all of Goole was built after 1820. The Lowther Hotel, Georgian, is the oldest standing building. The larger water tower was once reckoned to be the biggest in England, able to hold 750,000 gallons. St John's Church completed in 1838 by the navigation company, is Perpendicular in style. It is close to the dock sheds and contains memorials to ships as well as seamen.
