Ystradmeurig, Ceredigion, is a hamlet placed in lonely country 14 miles South East of Aberystwyth. The Cors Goch Glan Teifi, or Bog of Tregaron, lies to the South, and the hills roll away northwards to the Plynlimon massif. The church, restored in the 19^th century, stands next to the old school of St John's College, with its pointed windows and yellow walls. The school was founded in 1734 by Edward Richard, a schoolmaster of genius, who attracted the sons of many distinguished Welshmen of the early 18^th century. The school still maintains the old traditions. There is little to show of the old castle except a few mounds. It was first built by Gilbert de Clare in the early 12^th century. It passed into Welsh hands and was finally dismantled in 1208.

The Caradoc Falls are a triple cascade, which have to be reached on foot. In wet weather they are impressive.
