Visit Whittlesey and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast accommodation:

Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire. An industrial and market town with a forest of tall brickwork chimneys stretching westwards towards Peterborough. Until the 19th century, Whittlesey Mere was a 1900-acre lake, much broadened during floods. In winter it froze hard enough for skating, which was not only a major Fenland sport, but one of the fastest and most reliable ways of getting about. The last great drainage scheme of 1851 used a massive centrifugal pump to remove the water. This drove away many species of wildfowl, but also banished the agues and rheumatics which had plagued the fen-dwellers.
