Uttoxeter, Staffordshire. The strangest thing about this small market town is its name. Today it is often called “Ucheter” or “Uxeter” and in the past it has been spelt in a variety of ways: Wotocheshede (Domesday Book, 1086), Uttokishedere (1175), Wittokeshather (1242), Uittokesather and Huttokesather (1251). It is believed to derive from a form of Witta, a man's name, and an old word for heath.
Today Uttoxeter is known mainly for its racecourse, reckoned the finest National Hunt Steeplechase course in the Midlands; and for a visit paid it about 1780 by Dr Samuel Johnson. Johnson's father was a bookseller in Lichfield and used to have a stall in Uttoxeter market. On one occasion, the young Samuel, too proud to stand at a market stall, refused to go with his father to Uttoxeter. Many years later, an old man near the end of his life, Dr Johnson returned — to do penance for his act of disobedience. For several hours he stood bareheaded, in the rain, on the spot in the Market Place where his father's stall used to stand: “In contrition I stood, and I hope the penance was expiatory.” Today there is a substantial stone conduit here with a carving depicting the scene.
About 3 miles North of Uttoxeter, among meadows between the Rivers Dove and Churnet, lies the village of Rocester. Once a Roman station, Rocester has seen much history. in the churchyard is the shaft of a 700-year-old cross, with interlaced work, said to be the best preserved example in the country; nearby are the remains of an Augustinian abbey.
