Cheadle, Staffordshire. The outstanding building in this old market town is the red stone Roman Catholic church with its 200-ft spire, a landmark for miles. The church, built in 1846, was designed by A. W. N. Pugin, and is regarded as one of his masterpieces. Brass lions rampant guard the west door and inside all is rich colour. Cheadle's parish church, only eight years older, retains the communion rails and an oak chest from an earlier church.
About 3 miles East of Cheadle lies the village of Oakamoor and between the two are the 250 acres of the Hawksmoor Nature Reserve which is also a bird sanctuary. Hawksmoor was bought by public subscription and presented to the National Trust by its founder. Mr J. R. B. Masefield, a well-known Staffordshire naturalist. The Reserve was opened to the public in 1927 and six years later the gates at the entrance were erected and opened by the founder's cousin, the late John Masefield. There are nature trails through the Reserve, which rises to 750 ft in one part. Birds of all kinds, including curlew and pheasant, can be seen; and unusual trees such as lodge pole pine and red oak have been planted.
