Usk, Monmouthshire. On the East bank of the river from which it gets its ancient Celtic name, the town of Usk looks over broad meadowlands. Through them the river flows with few preoccupations other than to be a centre for first-class fishing, with suitably first-class inns. Usk is in some sense the capital of the Monmouthshire that is exclusively rural. Its past is half forgotten. Formerly it was a Roman station, for Burrium has been identified with the present town; but — unlike the neighbouring Roman places, military as at Caerleon, and civilian as at Caerwent — the original has not been located. There is a castle dating from the days of the Lords Marcher, a foundation of the De Clares, set on a hill above the town and reached by a steep ascent. All that remains of it is a grassed quadrangle over which rise the main gateway and a square keep, a large round tower of Conquest type, and portions of the hall and living-rooms. It is a piece of architecture that manages, even in ruin, to keep the balance and proportion shown by medieval builders, and its detached parts retain a separate dignity.
