Pontypool, Torfaen. About 9 miles North West of Newport, Pontypool represents one of the earliest of towns in the South Wales area to adventure on a career of industrial production. Its interest in iron goes back, perhaps, even to the times of the Roman government of Britain, which put a military post at Caerleon and a civilian settlement at Caerwent. In 1720, it was the first place in which tinplate was successfully produced in Britain. it was an active producer of tinplate and steel, though its collieries have become of more importance to it. The traditionally industrial nature of its history gave its workers a leading part to play in the Chartist risings of 1839. In 1811 Pontypool was a thriving place and, like the town of Usk, a great and busy centre for japanning work.
At Trosnant, near Pontypool, from 1732 to 1770 a Baptist seminary of education flourished, founded by John Griffith, who was also in charge of local ironworks. He concentrated on the spread of education in the farming community and carried his enthusiasm as far as America, where he emigrated in 1759.
