Sturminster Newton, Dorset. Sturminster has a nice variety of house-styles - red-brick, thatch, whitened cob, stone and even some exposed Tudor-type timbering. Each Monday this small town holds the most important livestock market in the southern half of the Blackmoor Vale, which was Hardy's “vale of little dairies”. William Barnes, the dialect poet, was born here and went to the school near the church. The latter, down a pretty street South East from the square, was dulled in the 19th century but has a good 15th-century waggon roof with carved bosses and stars, one entertaining 1921 window by the Irishman, Harry Clarke, and plenty of Victorian drama in others.

Just South, leading to Newton over the beautiful Stour, is one of Dorset's finest medieval bridges. Like several others in the county, it bears a plaque saying anyone “injuring” it will be deported: the anticipated weapon, apparently, was an over-laden cart. Nearby is a still-busy mill. The local coarse-fishing is celebrated.

About 1½ miles East at Fiddleford is another working mill attached to a 14th- and l5th-century house.
