Gillingham, Kent. The largest of the Medway Towns, it merges into its neighbour, Chatham, with which it shares the naval dockyards and depot. Gillingham has prehistoric and Roman traces and the Anglo-Saxons gave the place its name. Later it became a Norman manor but, like Chatham, it did not come into prominence until late in the Middle Ages, principally for its docks and ship-building. Buildings are mostly comparatively modern, but two of its churches have origins dating back to Norman times.
The Parish Church of St Mary is on The Green, the heart of the oldest part of the town. It has some Norman work, including two pillars in the chancel, while the font, large enough for total immersion, is of the same period. The rood-screen and the arch from which it hangs are 14th-century and there is much work of the 15th and 16th centuries remaining. The building was thoroughly restored in the middle of the last century.
The Parish Church of St Margaret in Rainham, formerly a village but now part of the borough, dates mainly from the 14th and 15th centuries with some traces of Norman work. Remains of six medieval consecration crosses and some faint traces of a medieval mural may be seen.
