Stratton, Cornwall. Mother to the resort of Bude, it is the most attractive small town of this region, on a hillside with narrow streets and nice old houses, some thatched. The Tree inn was formerly a manor house of the Grenville family. In 1643 it was Sir Bevil Grenville's headquarters before he led the Royalists to victory at Stamford Hill (½ mile north west). A plaque on the inn's wall commemorates the battle. It was also the birth and death place of the famous giant of over 7 ft. Anthony Payne, a Grenville retainer, who fought beside Sir Bevil at Stamford Hill and soon afterwards carried home his master's dead body from another battlefield, Lansdown Hill near Bath. The church contains an excellent brass (1561) to Sir John Arundell, Henry VIII's Vice-Admiral, a Burne-Jones east window, and a finely carved waggon roof.

Two other churches nearby are well worth a visit. Poughill's, 1 mile north west, is basically 15th-century and has two big l5th-century wall paintings, restored in 1894 but still splendid, and excellent l6th-century carved bench-ends. Launcells, 14 miles south east, is mainly l4th-century and stands in a wooded hollow, its yellow-lichened tower looking grand from a distance. It is exceptional for two reasons. Firstly, its interior has hardly been restored at all and is therefore much as it was in the 15th century. Secondly, its big windows are quite without coloured glass, making it beautifully light: a great help in appreciating its complete set of original carved bench-ends and fine 15th-century. Barnstaple tiles on its sanctuary floor.
