Bude, Cornwall, 14 miles west of Stratton, is an unusual little resort in that it stands well back from its abundant sands. Between the two is a vast grass playground containing cricket pitch and golf courses. All around are hotels, churches and houses. The canal through the town was built 1819-26 for £128,000 and extended some 30 miles. to Launceston. One of its main cargoes was beach-sand, like Padstow's valued as fertilizer because of its high lime content. The railways made the canal redundant and now only about 2 miles of it are navigable. The quaint castle on a grass promontory just south of the canal was built in 1850 by Sir Goldsworthy Gurney, the inventor who experimented with steam and lighting, and introduced steam stage coaches between London and Bath. It now houses the Urban District Council. In Bude was formed the first Surf Life Saving Club.
