Stalybridge, Cheshire. The name of this small manufacturing town on the River Tame probably derives from that of the Stayley or Stavelegh family, who were prominent landowners in the district from the 14th century. The present Stayley Hall was constructed in 1580 on the site of an earlier building of 1343. It is said that John Wesley preached here in 1745. Stalybridge reached its full stature early in the 19th century as a cotton town, having been one of the first to employ steam power in the mills, but with the decline of cotton local enterprise was largely deflected into light industry. The amenities of the borough include Cheetham Park, with its colourful bird sanctuary, and the beautiful Stamford Park of 60 acres surrounding a large boating lake.
