Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester. The Church of St Michael, though completely restored, is on a site that has held a church since the 13th century St Michael's is noteworthy for its stained glass of about 1500 portraying the Assheton family, and there are also five windows depicting the history of St Helena and her discovery of the True Cross. Sir Ralph Assheton was known as the Black Knight from the colour of his armour and Sir Thomas fought at the battle of Nevilles Cross, Durham.
Medlock Vale, l½ miles North East of the town, is on the banks of the Medlock with Hen Cote Cottage at Daisy Nook. It is a rural refuge in an industrial area, and comprises 15½ acres of National Trust property, bought in 1944 and 1951.
