Southport, Merseyside. Southport is a pleasant resort most notable for Lord Street, a handsome boulevard, lined with trees and elegant shops which runs parallel to the coast for l½ miles with its continuation, Albert Road. Marine Lake and Princes Park lie outside the promenade. Beyond, Marine Drive runs right along the seafront, passing the municipal golf links on the North and Victoria Park and its esplanade on the South.

Southport Flower Show is a famous annual event, with horse-jumping trials as an added attraction. Other special events include county cricket, lawn tennis, golf tournaments, a music festival and a stage dancing festival. The Royal Birkdale Golf Club is well known, and the Ryder Cup Competition has been held there more than once. Marine Lake has 91 acres of water for sailing yachts and other boats.

St Cuthbert's is the parish church of North Meols. It was rebuilt in 1730 and the spire is dated 1739. Enlargements and additions were made by Isaac Taylor in 1908. There is a Nollekens monument, and carving by Richard Prescot of about 1704. Holy Trinity Church is 19th-century, rebuilt by Huon Matear, 1903-14. its high tower is a landmark in the town its pinnacles were restored with fibreglass. The interior has a ribbed barrel vault, and flamboyant stone tracery in the chancel roof.
