Southall, Greater London. Southall is a Greater London suburb and also in the ceremonial county of Middlesex. Nearby places are Greenford, Northolt, Yeading, Hanwell, Hayes, Hounslow and Heston. It is on the Grand Union Canal which is still used by pleasure craft.
The name Southall is Anglo-Saxon for “South corner”.
The main east west road A4020 through the town is variously named Uxbridge Road - The Broadway - High Street. Historically this was part of the main Oxford to London stagecoach route. Horse drawn carriages, electric trams, electric trolleybuses and, finally in 1960 diesel-engined buses were the various modes of transport along this road.
Today, Southall is mostly a residential district for peoples of South Asian origin, most significantly, Indian Punjabis. There is also a very strong Somali presence. Southall has London's largest Asian shopping centre. The Glassy Junction pub, serving several Indian draught beers, accepts Indian rupees in payment and was the first UK public house to do so.
