South Molton, Devon. It grew as an Anglo-Saxon colony c. 700; was prosperous from the early Middle Ages to the mid-19th century with a woollen industry, as a coach stop on the route to Barnstaple and Bideford, and as the nearest town to the iron and copper mines round North Molton. Then the wool industry declined, the railway (1854) spoilt the coach trade, and soon the mines closed. Since 1850 its population has decreased by nearly a half. It is now a pleasantly modest, lively small town, serving a large farming area including south-west Exmoor, with, since 1961, a livestock market. Its attractive, mainly Georgian, square is given grandeur by the Guildhall (1740—3) and Assembly Rooms (1863), which are also interesting inside. Opposite them a pollarded lime avenue leads to a big church with a fine l5th-century tower and excellent carved stone pulpit.
