North Molton, Devon, 2¾ miles North East, is a largish, hillside village with attractively simple houses round a big tarmac square, and an excellent church. The latter has an exceptionally beautiful medieval pulpit and a rather splendid vast alabaster monument (c. 1626) to Sir Amyas Bamfylde, his wife and many children. The Bamfyldes were local mining landlords. The main copper mines were at Heasiey Mill, about l½ miles North. At Flitton Barton, 1½ miles North West of the village, is a hollow oak of great age, possibly 1,000 years or more.
