Simonburn, Northumberland. A green surrounded by low cottages, many of them white-washed, friendly gardens, and tall trees: that is all there is to Simonburn, but it is enough to make it lovely. There is a fragmentary ruin of Simonburn Castle within short walking distance. The last attack on it is said to have been by villagers searching for a hidden treasure which reputedly was so great it could buy all of Northumberland. On the crags nearby is a circle of four standing stones known as the Goat Stones. St Mungo's Church is a handsome buff stone building of 13th century origin with rebuildings in 1762 and 1863. The floor slopes from West to East, in harmony with the site, or perhaps because the chancel was once a few steps down from the nave. Portions of ancient carved stones are attractively set in a niche in the porch. An original double piscina is in the sanctuary wall. Near the wooded churchyard stands the 18th century rectory.
