Haydon Bridge, Northumberland. The South Tyne divides this quiet stone-built village. The bridge, rebuilt in 1773, had to be chained and barred in the more turbulent days of Scottish raiding parties. Of special interest is the Old Church, standing apart from the village on a hillside. Its nave was pulled down in the late 18th century, to build the new church in the centre. But in the late 19th century it was repaired. Much of the Old Church was of stone from nearby Roman sites. In its abbreviated form today, it consists of a Norman chancel and a l4th-century chapel. The east window is a triplet of lancets only 7 inches wide. The font was once a Roman altar.

About l½ miles South West is Langley Castle, a fine example of a 14th-century battlemented tower house, restored in 1900. Its walls are 6 ft thick. Now it is used by a girls' school. Staward Pele is 4 miles South West, a ruin on a steep and rocky bank of the Allen River. The tower is at least 14th-century, and its occupants have included an l8th-century outlaw, Dicky of Greenwood. The Allen Banks, 3 miles West of Haydon Bridge where the Allen joins the Tyne, are National Trust property. Here are 185 acres of hill and river scenery to walk in.
