Shipton-under-Wychwood, Oxfordshire, has many fine old houses, among them the 1603 Shipton Court. An old inn called the Shaven Crown was originally a hospice run by the monks from Bruern Abbey, which is now a private house. The Great Hall, now the lounge of the hotel, was the monks' refectory, while a bedroom (number 11), was the original hospice chapel. The parish church is a fine example of the Early English style. Particularly interesting is the font with a panel carved with the Bear and Ragged Staff, device of the Earls of Warwick. Note the l8th-century double tomb in the churchyard. In a wooded setting nearby is the ancient Prebendal House with its 15th-century chapel, reminder of the days when the church was a prebend of Salisbury Cathedral.
