Sedbergh, Cumbria. There are two points of interest in this hill town. The noted boys school was founded by Roger Lupton, a canon of Windsor and provost of Eton, in 1525. A new school built in 1716 is now the library and museum and most of the present buildings, extending to the South, are late 19th-century. An early and successful headmaster had the unlikely name of Posthumous Wharton. The Quaker meeting house was built in Brigflatts, just over 1 mile South West, in 1675. White-walled and furnished in utter simplicity, it keeps a fragment of a yew tree under which George Fox preached. The parish church, St Andrew's, is chiefly 13th-century work with some 18th-century furnishings. Sedbergh's setting, below the slate Howgill Fells, is more like the Lake District just over the border than the Yorkshire Dales to the South and East. These are huge smooth hills with rich grass cover. Sedbergh is a busy market town.
