Today, Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, has a population of over 30,000. It is situated at the meeting of the Gade, Colne, and Chess rivers. Rickmansworth, an old market town, is now largely residential. Today it has many recreation areas, mainly natural, including lakes, woods, and Moor Park. The Aquadrome, a public park, has several big lakes used for sailing, canoeing and fishing, woodland areas and a play area for children .
The town's history dates back to Saxon days when it was known as 'Ryckmer'. It took its name from the local landowner together with 'worth' meaning 'farm'. The Domesday Book of 1086 noted it as 'The Manor of Prichemaresworde'.
Rickmansworth's growth in the 1920s and 1930s was accelerated by the arrival of the Metropolitan line of the London Underground. With this transport facility, and the M25, it has become a commuter town for London. Papermaking is a major industry locally.
