Bushey, Hertfordshire. This once small village has extended greatly, turning into a rambling commuter centre for London, but still retaining much of interest for the visitor, mainly around the old church.
St James's Church, in the High Street, enlarged in the last century, has a high l5th century nave and west tower with a stair-turret. Built of flint, its chancel is of the 13th century and the windows to the North and South are original. An unusual feature, a tympanum with the royal arms of Queen Anne, rests on a large beam and divides the nave from the chancel. The Jacobean pulpit has strapwork motifs and the original sounding board above.
The Rectory, East of the church, although altered in the 19th century, still has many of its original l7th century features, including two interesting fireplaces.
Around the church is a pretty group of cottages and, higher up the street, Bushey House, with a Greek-Doric portico built at the beginning of the 19th century Bourne Hall, opposite, is Georgian, three stories high with eight bays. There are a number of pleasant 19th century Gothic villas but the Cloisters is mid-Victorian. Both the Congregational and the Methodist churches were built in 1904, the former in a style typical of the period.
In Aldenham Road, a little further out, is Bushey Hall, a large Victorian brick and stone mansion, its tower on the left standing away from the main structure.
There is an interesting 18th century house, once known as Sly's Castle and now called Hilfield, in Hilfield Lane. It is a cemented building, castellated and turreted and has a gatehouse with porticullis.
