Old Bolingbroke, Lincolnshire. In the already ancient Norman castle of this historic village in the rolling foot-hills of the Wolds Henry IV was born in 1367, son of John of Gaunt and Blanche, heiress of the Earl of Lancaster, Lord of Bolingbroke. In 1643 the castle was captured by the Parliamentarians, and was reduced to ruin in the years that followed. The Church of SS. Peter and Paul stands to the North of the castle site. It consists of the old south aisle from the 14th century turned into nave and chancel, a sturdy, battlemented tower, and a north aisle added in 1890. Of special interest are the two worn heads by the old doorway, believed to be John of Gaunt's parents, Edward III and Queen Philippa.
